W. A. Ogden
1841–1897 · Franklin County, Ohio · United States
Raised in Indiana from age six, Ogden could write down a tune by ear before he was ten. During the Civil War he led a men's choir in an Indiana regiment that became familiar across the Army of the Cumberland. He later studied under Lowell Mason, and after his first songbook sold half a million copies he became music superintendent for Toledo's public schools in 1887.
