Raised on a Maryland farm by Methodist parents, Poole graduated from Washington College and became a Methodist minister around Wilmington, Delaware. He also headed the state's Anti-Saloon League for a time. Hymn writing was his break from pastoral work, and he produced about five hundred texts with the plain aim of helping people.
