Trained at Andover Theological Seminary, Sleeper spent his early ministry doing home mission work in Massachusetts and Maine. He then pastored the Summer Street Congregational Church in Worcester, Massachusetts for over thirty years. His hymns were gathered in The Rejected King, and Hymns of Jesus (1883).
