A pastor near Gotha, Hey became court preacher there in 1827 and drew large crowds, though his Pietist leanings led to his transfer to Ichtershausen as superintendent in 1832. He wrote mainly for children. His illustrated Fables for Children, with religious songs attached, was translated into English several times.
