When a commercial publisher turned down his songs, Thompson started his own publishing house in East Liverpool, Ohio, and later added a store selling pianos and sheet music. He wrote both words and music, jotting down any idea in verse the moment it came so he would never lose it. He fell ill on a European tour and died weeks after returning home.
