Rector of Barwick-in-Elmet near Leeds for over thirty years, Bathurst resigned in 1852 because he could no longer square his convictions with parts of the Book of Common Prayer. His Psalms and Hymns for Public and Private Use (1831) held over two hundred hymns, most of them his own, including 'O for a faith that will not shrink'.
