His organist father died when he was three, so his grandfather in Cambridge raised him and placed him in the choir of King's College Chapel at eight. Study in Leipzig brought him the friendship of Mendelssohn and Schumann. He later founded the London Bach Society and became professor of music at Cambridge. A knighthood came in 1871, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey.
